Letter to the Editor

Letter to the Editor

“When I listened to John Brooks remarks on RAP and vacuum, (Vol.2, No. 6, June 2006) I believe he mentioned that he saw a difference in arterial emboli counts between reservoirs with 30 and 40 micron filtration.  If I heard correctly then I don’t fully understand his remarks.  These micron sizes must refer to the cardiotomy filter elements.  As venous blood does not enter the cardiotomy filter, this filter should not have any influence on venous return and related emboli.”

Colin Green
Copenhagen, Denmark

“The 30 to 40 micron size filtration was in reference to the hard-shell venous reservoir filter that the blood passes through prior to settling into the reservoir container, not the cardiotomy filter portion of the reservoir that manages suction and vent return.”

I hope this helps.

John D. Brooks
Chief Perfusionist
Missouri Baptist Medical Center.

Letter to the Editor

Letter to the Editor

I am interested in the editorial of November 2005 (Vol. 1, No 4) "We Need to Get the Recognition and Respect We Deserve".  I said the same thing in a letter to the editor to AmSECT TODAY, many years ago when I was pushing the idea of licensure.  Unfortunately, I stated that through licensure, or some othr kind of legislative action, we could begin to achieve the respect we deserve.  I recall two rebutals specifically, Dr. G.Rainer warned that with recognition comes exposure and Mark Kurusz stated that respect cannot be legislated but, must be earned.  I remember thinking that, unfortunately, the exposure already existed in that the lawyers knew who we were and, that I believed that, given the history of those of us who had been in the practice since before certification, we had earned respect.

I am in agreement with the editorial.  Toward the end of my perfusion career, I remember being asked by my employer to sign a new employment agreement which I refused to sign because of a clause stating something to the effect that I would work under the title of Perfusionist and/or any other title which the employer might choose to use.  While I am cognizant of the dynamics of the practice of perfusion and the fact that we must learn to wear more than just one hat, I believe that, through the proper education of hospital administrators and others concerned, we can be proactive rather than reactive regarding the changes we are experiencing.

Thanks for your continued good work.

Frank Delgado
